             PONY CORRAL

             RESTAURANT & BAR

             (444 St. Mary Ave)

ith nearly 30 years in business the
Pony Corral is surely a Winnipeg
success story. The restaurant, owned by
Peter Ginakes, has grown from its one
original location on Pembina Highway to four
            flourishing locations around Winnipeg.
Ginakes’ career in the restaurant business
began at a young age. By 16 he was a cook
at the Thunderbird Restaurant on McPhillips,
which his father had opened in the 1950’s. In
1982, Ginakes and his father purchased the
Rib Shack on Pembina Highway, and after
six years in business renamed it the Pony
            Corral Restaurant & Bar.
It was then that Ginakes began the
            successful pattern of purchasing restaurants
and buildings in distress and converting
them into popular casual dining experiences.
The Pony Corral on Grant Avenue took over
the building of the former Bombay Bicycle
Club, and the Nairn location was a former
Shakeys Pizza. The most recent location
to open was the former Cork & Dock Pier 7
building, which was transformed into a Pony
            Corral and subsequently renamed Pony
            Corral Pier 7.
The third of the four locations, situated
downtown at 444 St. Mary Ave, became
