“More training (of trades). More
development,” answers Penner,
when asked about what some
firm’s near-term priorities. And in
so offering, he provides another
glimpse into the process of
continuous improvement that’s
become the CIC Way.
“Sometimes, in the trades, what
happens is the plumber will be
fixated on his work, the electrician
his work, the drywaller his work.
So what we try and instill – to the
drywaller for example – is to keep
an eye on what the millworker
is going to need behind you. If
you see something wrong – even
though your job is done – you’ve
got to be aware of what the next
guy is going to have in front of him.
Otherwise you might be coming
back to change something. So
it’s embracing the whole team
philosophy and getting better –
that’s the training side of it.”
Prepping the site for the next
guy. Team building. Making sure
everybody on the client team is
on board and knows what’s going
on. Listening well and keeping
the customer happy. Keeping the
place clean.
It’s all practical, common sense
advice, of course, but it’s helped
to set Penner and his company Building a better
apart in an often crowded field of
consultants and contractors. Manitoba with you.
